Q&A: Computer science: BA or BS?

Question by Fiend_Angelical: Computer science: BA or BS?
I’m a computer science major. My problem is that I came in from high school with a ton of credits in arts (primarily psychology, literature/English), and I could graduate in two years if I get a BA. However, I’m worried that I won’t be able to get technical jobs with a BA. Both degrees have the exact same comp sci curriculum–one just has 30 hours of math above calc I. Should I hang around school for three years and try to get the BS, or just graduate and get into the job market?

Best answer:

Answer by malica
If can afford to hold out, it would really be best to get the BS instead. It’s hard to say who would or wouldn’t accept a BA in computer science. I know if it were me I would just assume that if you had a BA in computer science that your school only had the one option (CS can be offered through so many different faculties – at my old school it was through the Math faculty, but I’ve also heard Arts and Science), but I would also assume that you had it easier as an arts student instead of someone who suffered through with Math or Science instead.

would like to obtain a Masters in Psychology or Counseling….online degree programs?

Question by MadameJazzy: would like to obtain a Masters in Psychology or Counseling….online degree programs?
Okay, I am in school right now for a post-secondary teachers license…so that I can become a high school guidance counselor because I’m in the state of TX and now my hubby and I want to relocate back to TN in a year or two. I absolutely do not want to teach. I just want to counsel.
I want to find a online degree program for psychology or counseling. I want answers only for suggestions for online universities….I’m a new mom who can ONLY do online.
I’m at an online school right now that doesn’t have a psychology or counseling program, so I would have to switch schools totally….what online school would be okay for psychology or counseling??
FYI, I already have a BA in Psychology from UT Knoxville. I would prefer online university for my masters. Thanks!

Penn State Worldwide

completely online and you know where your degree is coming from. they are offering psychology programs starting this summer. id reccomend going through a well known university, like Penn State, and not a school that is a “for profit” school, like university of phoenix, kaaplan, etc…

Believe me, I did read through this whole answer and it was exhausting. By what I read, you seem extremely qualified in some ways and not qualified in others.

Extremely Qualified:
GPA is outstanding
Community Service is excellent
Lots of nice awards =)

Not Qualified:
Extracurriculars….? (besides sports)

Also, you are missing a critical part, which is your SAT/ACT/SAT II scores which are a big part of your application. Come back and post when you take those tests.

Music Advocacy Speech to the Parma City School District

Speech presented on 5/26/2010 at the Regular Session of the PCSD School Board meeting which began at 5:30pm in the cafeteria of Parma Senior High School. (This is a practice run for the speech, as I wasn’t able to get a video recording of the actual speech) Full Text: Good evening, everyone. My name is Jason Mlady and I would like to begin by saying that, quite simply, I would not be who I am nor at the point I am in my life without the opportunities afforded to me through the Parma City School District’s programs in music and the arts. I am currently in the Purdue University “All-American Marching Band” and the secretary of the Purdue chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity. The mission of the fraternity states, “Kappa Kappa Psi is a fraternal organization that promotes the advancement of college and university bands through dedicated service and support to bands; comprehensive education; leadership opportunities; and recognition; for the benefit of its members and society.” Out of even more than simply “dedicated service and support to bands,” I cannot sit back and watch this district systematically remove music and art programs, along with many others, from its buildings and educational curricula. The mission of the Parma City School District states that it strives to stimulate critical thinking, sound decision-making, effective communication, cultural appreciation, and the joy of life-long learning. Through these means, the district is

Psychology graduate school question.?

Question by fcmnum_22: Psychology graduate school question.?
I am on track to graduate with a BS with Honors in Psychology, with plans of opening my own counseling clinic. Should I try to get into a counseling doctorate program and get a MS and PhD out of it (and afterward get my license), or just get a MS and a license? All of this is assuming that money is no concern.

*Please provide some credentials with your answer so I know I’m not getting an answer from just anyone with an opinion.

Best answer:

Answer by Trisha
Do you ever want to be legally able to administer psychological assessments at your clinic? In most states, to administer assessments, especially projectives, you must be licensed as a psychologist. If testing is something you have no interest in, my best advice would be to shoot for the MS and a license. However, if your plan is to open a counseling clinic, you will find that the ability to administer and utilize psychological assessments will come in VERY handy. You do not have to have a doctorate to open a private clinic, but most people do. I am currently employed as an LPC-Intern in Texas, and I also plan on opening a private clinic, without the doctorate. Also be aware that in order to move from an LPC-Intern to a fully licensed LPC, each state requires a certain number of supervised hours – it may be awhile before you are able to open your own clinic. Just something to think about. Good luck!
