Q&A: What are my chances of getting into a master’s program in school psychology with a low undergrad gpa of 2.98?

Question by dom_neely: What are my chances of getting into a master’s program in school psychology with a low undergrad gpa of 2.98?
My strengths:
-Reputable private university
-Research experience
-Current work experience related to field
-Leadership responsibility
-Drive and passion for this field (school psychology)

Weaknesses:
-Low to mediocre GPA
-Afraid I will not stand out against other applicants with very high GPA’s
-Have not taken GRE general or psychology subtest and not very good at standardized tests

I would honestly like to know my chances of getting into a graduate program with a low GPA. It’s causing me anxiety thinking about it but I know that there is more to me than my GPA and I’m hoping that admissions counselors see that as well. Realistically, do I have a chance of getting into a graduate program?

What leadership responsibility do you have to offer? That one caught my eye. Were you in the military? Are you a manager of a small group of people? You don’t have that low a GPA, but you might want to go back and take a few classes over to raise it. I think you have a chance to get into a Masters program, but you might want to continue to get more experience so that you have something more to offer than just a Bachelors Degree. Showing Drive and passion is great, but I could do that easily, and to be honest with you I have no interest in the field.

I screwed up. Took it easy in college, now 75k in the hole, and worried about my future. Help?

Question by : I screwed up. Took it easy in college, now 75k in the hole, and worried about my future. Help?
I dropped out of high school due to emotional problems. My family was in the middle of a divorce, and my mother and father used me and my brother to battle things out for them. Messed up, but it happens. I attempted suicide four times and dropped out of school. Then was home schooled by the county Board of Ed. and worked out a way to get my HS Diploma (not GED). I went to community college and did great- I had a 3.9 GPA, was in an international honors society, and got accepted into several very good schools. I transferred to the toughest public school in the area to save money.

I was not prepared for the level of rigor the schools curriculum had. My first semester I got two B-’s and a C+, which destroyed my self-esteem since I had never gotten anything lower than an A- since graduating HS. Plus, I realized how badly I screwed up in HS- I had never taken math above Algebra II, and had never taken Chemistry, Physics or Biology (except for an intro course at CC). So I was limited as to what major I’d choose since picking a science related major would require me to do all of those remedial mathematics, chemistry, and biology courses and would set me back a year and a half. So I became a psychology major, and the next semester I did great because it was my passion. But then, I started having serious insomnia and later found out I had bipolar disorder. It was in this time that I got a slew of C’s and then tried to kill myself. I was hospitalized for a month. I am a senior now, with a 2.8 GPA (not counting 3.9 CC gpa, but who cares about CC anyway), and I don’t have much of a chance for grad school, might have to settle with working a minimum wage job, and am in debt with very little means to pay back. I have one more semester to go, in which I hope to bring my GPA back up to a 2.9.

After that, it would take 1 year of courses to bring my GPA up to maybe a 3.2 or 3.25.

Cumulatively, I don’t think people give the same worth to community college GPA. My courses there were 3 credits each, and here they are 4 credits each. I didn’t know how to study, I broke down with high stress, and now I’m scared I’ll be living on welfare.

If you want to avoid a career at Taco Bell, you need to get some serious vocational training, preferably an apprenticeship in some decent trade.
Perhaps you could look into one of the demanding trades such as Tool & Die Maker, or Machinist.

I feel miserable in college studying psychology, want to drop out and study something I love. HELP!?

Question by TreeHuggingHippie: I feel miserable in college studying psychology, want to drop out and study something I love. HELP!?
Right now I’m in my 3rd year of my bachelor’s in psychology, and I don’t think I can take it anymore. I’ve had a pretty rough life (when I was little I didn’t have any friends, I didnt trust ppl, I lived with my grandparents in a old folks condominium after my father left me and moved to another country, I fell victim to sexual abuse by a teacher in my high school years and was a loner, suffered from mayor depression and social anxiety since I was 16). I know it’s a little forward saying all those things, but maybe it will help you understand my emotional & mental state, and how I’ve never really learned to be strong, I’ve always been scared of my surroundings because I’ve been hurt many times. Studying Psych was something I found quite interesting, and I still do, but I don’t see myself being a psychologist. I dont like going to college (I feel very insecure & get anxiety attacks) plus I’ve always been a very creative person (I draw, paint & sculpt very well) and I don’t get to live out my passion of being manually creative and making things that I feel proud of while in this normal collegial setting (focused on books and tests). I feel very dissatisfied, and I’ve gotten more and more depressed through this last year.

Right now I started going to my psychiatrist and have my 1st appointment with a psychologist next friday so I can work with the darker sides of my feelings, but I know I need to do something fast, because I just keep getting worse. I want to drop out of college, for now, maybe someday go back, when I’ve overcome my depression….. but I’m thinking about enrolling in a culinary arts school, especially a pastry chef course, which will take a year, and I can get a specialized job, and learn techniques in cake baking and decorating (like in ace of cakes, hahaha) and maybe even start my own small buissness. I’ve always loved baking too, and I think it will be something more instantly rewarding which will boost my morale and help me feel better about myself and get back on track. I guess I should also add that the death of one of my grandparents a few months ago exacerbated my depression, since they were my saviors when nobody else wanted me. I guess I need to feel like I finally have something for myself, that I can be proud of, and studying this quick carreer might make me feel proud when I finally be able to get a nice job and do something I love, being creative. Then I could go back and finish my psych degree, then masters and be a liscensed counselor, and help other teens that have gone through what I went through….

Do you think my plan is a good idea? Or should I stick out another 2 years of college? I’m not very proud of my psych studies, the curriculum is bullshit, I’ve hardly learned anything, I feel like I’m wasting my time :-( But I know being able to say I’m a college graduate is a big thing. Plus I dont want to dissapoint my family, theyve always wanted me to study something big and important, they didnt even think psychology was good enough, so imagine what they will think when I tell them I want to drop it.

Thanks so much for reading this, i know it was long. And thank you so much for your help :-) If you have gone through something similar, I’d love to hear your story. Thanks again!

If you’re not proud of your psych studies, then change it.. Do something that you’d proud of in the future. You’re still young, and have all the time to change a different career path/major. Your parents should understand :)

I would say that just depends on whether the college wants to hire you based on your qualifications. Colleges aren’t like High Schools in the sense that they are required to go off of what you are certified to teach (although public primary schools don’t do this all the time either!). So, its just going to come down to how you compare to other applicants. You are also just going to have to look at the job description and their requirements for being considered.

I guess short answer is I don’t think there are any state or national ‘laws’ saying you can’t just because you don’t have a bachelors or masters in psychology to teach it at the college level.

How can i improve myself for college applications? I NEED SOME SERIOUS HELP

Question by Pineapple: How can i improve myself for college applications? I NEED SOME SERIOUS HELP
I really want to go somewhere good with a lot of scholarship opportunities

im a rising junior

Im part of a magnet school that offers an advanced curriculm and all ap and honors (all ap for juniors and seniors) im taking 6 APs next year

im president of community service club

i do 4 or 5 other clubs (chess, spirit, FBLA, health occupation leaders)

i dont do any school sports but i take tap lessons and im pretty good

i do have a solid gpa like a 3.8

#11 in my class of 400

National Honor Society

On AP exams i got a 5 on gov’t (politics) and a 3 on biology

National Society of High School Scholars

i did an internship/career exploration thing this summer

I took the SAT in the beginning of sophmore year and got a 1770 (how much better do you tihnk i will do in teh spring of junior year with 10th and 11th grade knowledge i didnt have and an SAT prep course and book?)

i ran for juniorr class officer (did not win — sad story of conspiracy)

i got a 169 on my PSAT (i did not qualify but im taking it again)

Im taking teh ACT in the winter

It seems really good but im really worried because i dont really have that many accomplishments (i get highest science grade as a freshman and a community service award) and my transcript has some inconsistencies :
i only took world history one, not two (were supposed tot ake both but i went into the magnet school which has a different history curriculum)
I dont have any continuing electives (i took journalism 1, not 2 or 3) but im going into spanish 4 this year
im wondering if i shoudl take AP psychology or microeconmics (im more interested in psychology but i already took the regular psychology class last year and it would look weird to have two psychology classes, wouldn’t it? even though one is AP tell me what to do!! my other alternative is comparative gov’t)
im taking pe 10 as a junior because i didnt have the space in 10th grade to take it

What should i be doing about my college road trip next year — im so lost on what to do our counselors dont really care about college, only on getting you through high school…

How much do colleges take your course selection into consideration? should my courses reflect my interests, or should they be really different to try and experience everything??

SOMEBODY PLEASE GIVE ME A LONG REASSURING ANSWER FULL OF ADVICE

Answer by amerysse
Take whatever interests you the most. When colleges and universities look at your transcripts, they like seeing some sort of consistancy. Like with your Spanish. If you don’t continue with something, that’s ok too. Colleges understand that there are requirements that must be fulfilled and they might not be something that you’re crazy about. And you have PLENTY of extracurriculars. Volunteering looks great on college applications, and other applications too. I would play that up on your application. Talk about where you were, what you did, what you learned. With all the extracuriccular things you’re doing, plus your awesome GPA and class ranking, colleges will know that you know how to manage your time and won’t get too caught up partying :) The PE thing is fine too. As long as you didn’t fail it sophomore year, and retaking it as a junior, you’re fine :) I’d also start looking at which colleges and universities interest you your junior year. That way, when it’s time to start applying, during your senior year, you aren’t rushed. Be sure to visit schools that you’re interested in. Meet with professors, sit in on classes, try the food. Before you leave, make a list of questions you have so you don’t forget something that might be important. You might also talk to the financial aid office if you’re worried about applying for scholarships or other grants. Some AP classes might transfer into college classes (like the psychology!), so you might want to ask about that. Don’t worry too much about the ACT/SAT. They’re designed to test what you’ve learned throughout highschool. Going over a practice book a little would be good, but don’t stress over it. And don’t forget your calculator, like I did :)

I hope that’s long enough for you!

What kind of assignmentss are given in high school psychology classes?

Question by Carol F: What kind of assignmentss are given in high school psychology classes?
I’m wondering if in today’s h.s. classes, students are ever required to write about their personal lives…be it in a journal, or a paper about their families and how family members affected their lives, etc.

Best answer:
